Students insurance

To be prepared for unexpected illnesses and injuries as well as insuring a stable school life that will enable our students to study and realize their professional and career dreams during the academic life at Sun Moon University, it is compulsory for all International students to have or apply for a health insurance.

It is permissible for the International students at Sun Moon University to have or to subscribe to one of the following health insurances.

i. National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)
ii. Domestic companies that provide accident and health insurance/non-life insurance services for International students
iii. International companies that provide health insurance services for International students. (They must at least offer the same medical health care benefits as the national and domestic insurances in Korea, especially in case of illnesses and injuries)

※The international student studying at SMU who fails to submit a medical health insurance certificate will be excluded from all benefits of the international students’ scholarships and will be compelled to take a full responsibility for any unfortunate outcomes.

01. National Health Insurance Application Guide

1) What is the national Health Insurance Service?

- The national health insurance has been established by the Korean Government, for the purpose of providing nondiscriminatory access and financial coverage for basic health care services to Korean citizens. Nonetheless, the international student who applies for national Health Insurance Service (NHIS) while studying here, will also receive the same medical health care benefits as the Korean citizens.

2) Insurance fee: Prepay the amount of ₩ 47.500 on the 25th of each month.

※According to the 2016 standard, then International students residing in Asan will automatically receive 50% discount from the ‘Ordinary resident insurance fee’ (₩95,010), bring the amount to ₩ 47,500.
※Base on the date of entry, If the International student applies for the national Health Insurance Service and prepay, he/she can receive the health care benefits from the following mouth.

02. Subscription information of Domestic Insurance Companies

1) What are the conditions of the Domestic Insurance Companies for the International students?

- The International student who applies to any of the domestic Insurance Companies will receive medical health care benefits (hospital, drug, etc.) However, the subscription will automatically expire after 1 year.
Consequently, renewing the subscription is required each year before the date of expiration, to ensure that the applicant is a credible recipient of the Insurance benefits.
Here at Sun Moon University, we recommend the Kookmin (KB) Insurance service to our International student.

2) Insurance fee:

₩ 78,000 / 6 months
₩ 110,000 / 12 months(1 year)

3) Insurance subscription procedures

Students can subscribe and pay their Insurance fee when paying the tuition fee, (the Insurance subscription and payment is indicated on the tuition bill).
   ※ The International students are required to alert the Global Affairs Team, if the Insurance subscription sign isn’t indicated on the tuition bill. Furthermore, they are also encouraged to visit the office for further information regarding their Insurance.

※ The Insurance benefits will not be provided to subscribers (the International students) for the reasons bellow.

- Intentional self-injury
- Treatment to intentionally improve appearance (e.g. plastic surgery)
- Pregnancy and Childbirth
- A simple fatigue and boredom
- Non inflammatory disorders of female genital tract caused by habitual abortion, infertility and IVF-related complications (disease code N96-N98)
- In some cases of dentistry and Chines medicine
- Previous illness
- Medical expenses of a foreign-based institution (hospital). Namely, the insurance will only compensate domestic treatments.

※ All information, including the above information is subject to the insurance policy.

03. Insurance Service Center for International Student

The Global Affairs Team through the ‘Insurance Service Center’ is providing insurance services to the International students to help them better understand any information regarding the Insurance and facilitate the compensation (or claiming) processes.
Nevertheless, all matters pertaining to the Insurance, can only be processed on Thursdays.

1) The compensation (or claiming) Process.

- You must first pay the full medical expenses (hospital and pharmacy bills) by yourself
- You should visit the ‘Insurance Service Center’ (Global Lounge, Student Center 2nd Floor) with the receipt and all related documents(described below)
- You’ll get the corresponding amount (except the deductible) in about a week directly to your bank account

2) Required Documents for Claiming Application

i. Claim Report (you can have it at the Insurance Service Center)
ii. A copy of your bankbook and registration card ii. Medical record or medical certificate
iii. Medical (hospitalization or outpatient treatment) expenses statement issued by the relevant hospital. iv. Medicine(drugs) cost statement issued by the relevant pharmacy
※ Please note that during the claiming process, the insurance company may request additional documents if it is deemed necessary
